Payne's Gray Treefrogs are common here in Southern Indiana. In the summer, their sweet melodic croakings fill the night air. Treefrogs are amphibians, and as such, their eyes and skin must remain moist. Frogs' eyes are located closer to the top of their heads and their outward bulging shape allows each eye to have almost a 180 degree field of vision. Frogs have a third eyelid called a nictating membrane that moves horizontally across their eye and helps remove debris. When a frog eats, its eyes help to move food down the throat by retracting into the frog's head. Additionally, frogs are nearsighted above water and farsighted underwater. A frog can be surrounded by prey but can't see it unless the prey moves.
When I was in Costa Rica in 2005, the sheer variety of frogs and eye color among all the species was astounding. Frogs truly are amazing creatures!
I have been creating art for 20+ years in Southern Indiana using graphite pencils, colored pencils, acrylic paint, and watercolor. A large majority of my artwork depicts nature. I do not think that an artist needs to constrain his/herself to only one style of art or medium type. Ultimately, it is the act of creating something that the artists finds pleasing and then sharing that with others that is truly art. I find it sad that artists segregate themselves into groups that are intolerant of changes. With that said, having been taught traditional and purist art techniques, I have chosen to learn from that and go a different direction.
